About Medallion Manufacturing
By Luis Perez
This cap-stone project covers the design and manufacturing of custom medallions created for the graduating Mechanical Engineering class at Central Washington University
Abstract
A repeatable, consistent, and efficient manufacturing process is needed to create the approximately 30 MET medallions for the graduating class. Two approaches were developed: a casting method, and a machining method involving a computer numerically controlled (CNC) mill. The casting method was evaluated using a SolidCast simulation and experimentation to improve the product. The machining method cut the medallions from aluminum round using a band-saw, lathe, and CNC mill. While both methods created successful products, the processes were less efficient than originally estimated.
